The world knows well the ongoing persecution of Christians by the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Middle East. ISIS has also desecrated, looted, and destroyed Christians’ homes, monasteries, shrines, churches, and other ancient religious relics and artifacts in the region.
Hundreds of thousands of Christians have fled their homes and left everything behind seeking refuge in other lands.
Coming to their rescue are the Knights of Columbus through a unique program we can all participate in called “40 Bucks for Lent.”
Carl Anderson, supreme knight, called Lent during the Jubilee Year of Mercy the perfect time for the initiative, “During the Lenten season, we recall Christ’s suffering and death,” he said. “In turn, remembering and assisting those who are today suffering and dying for their belief in Christ is an excellent way to do good where it is most needed and to enter more deeply into the spirit of this season.”
The Knights are promoting the “40 Bucks for Lent” donation campaign using the hashtag #40BucksForLent to benefit its Christian Refugee Relief Fund.
Every dollar donated goes directly to support those who, despite the genocidal persecution against them, continue to remain steadfast in their faith. The fund provides housing, food, medical aid, education and other relief. It also supports efforts to raise awareness about the refugees’ dire situation.
Lent is a time for Christians to show solidarity and support for those in need. The “40 Bucks for Lent” campaign is one way to do that. Help those who are being persecuted for their faith by participating in this initiative at www.ChristiansAtRisk.org.
