HOPATCONG Bishop Serratelli made a pastoral visit to St. Jude Church here April 23 where he celebrated the vigil Mass for the Fifth Sunday of Easter. During the Mass, young people of St. Jude’s received the Sacrament of Confirmation, which was administered by the Bishop, assisted by Father Vidal Gonzalez, pastor.
St. Jude’s had its origins in two summer mission churches. In 1931 the parish in Netcong began a summer mission on River Styx Road. At the same time, another summer mission opened in the northern section of Hopatcong on Lakeside Avenue. In 1937, both churches became missions of the new parish in Mount Arlington. The River Styx church collapsed in the blizzard of 1947. In 1958 a new church was built on Maxim Drive and named St. Jude’s. Bishop Casey advanced St. Jude’s to parish status in 1966.
