DENVILLE A new school year started with new beginnings at Morris Catholic High School here. Those new beginnings were marked Sept. 8 with the blessing by Bishop Serratelli of Assumption College for Sisters, which recently moved to the campus, and the high school’s new sports field that was part of Morris Catholic’s capital campaign, Legacy of Leaders.
Bishop Serratelli first blessed the former convent on the campus which now is home to at Assumption College for Sisters where 35 sister-students are currently enrolled. The former convent also houses 20 international students from Burandi, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and El Salvador.
Sister of Christian Charity Joseph Spring, president of ACS, said, “We are so pleased that Bishop Serratelli came to bless our new site. The mission of Assumption College for Sisters is alive and well here in Denville and we are very happy to be in this lovely new location.” Afterward. a light reception was held.
After the blessing of ACS, the Bishop headed over to the new Sullivan Field, which is home to the Morris Catholic High School Crusaders. Student representatives from the football, lacrosse, soccer and baseball teams were present at the blessing along with faculty, parents, alumni and friends of Morris Catholic.
Michael St. Pierre, president of MC, said, “While we celebrate a new field, more significantly this a big win for Catholic education. It’s more than just a field, it’s a sign that our school is strong and growing. This is a really exciting time for us here.”
The new turf field was part of the Legacy of Leaders campaign, which also aims to raise funds for an endowment for needy school families and enhance the performing arts program. The goal is $1.2 million and so far, $900,000 has been pledged.
One of the highlights near the field is a new statue of Our Lady of Victories given by a Morris Catholic family. “For us, it’s a really powerfully symbol to our Catholic identity. It will now be a signature part of our campus,” said St. Pierre.
