Bishop marks Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on New Year¹s Day in Boonton
church
BOONTON Bishop Serratelli made a pastoral visit to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
(OLMC) Parish here to mark the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the
Mother of God on New Year¹s Day, Jan. 1, a holy day of obligation.
OLMC¹s history began when St. Vincent Martyr Parish in Madison developed a
Mass station in Boonton in the early 1800s. A frame church was built on
Birch Street in 1847. Bishop Bayley sent a resident pastor to Boonton in
1860, and that year a new church was built across the street from the old
church, which was dismantled and moved to Hibernia, which became a mission
of the Boonton parish. The church was substantially enlarged and renovated
in 1964. Our Lady of Mount Carmel School was opened in 1868.
