PASSAIC Bishop Serratelli made a pastoral visit to St. Mary Parish here on Mother’s Day, May 10. During his visit, the bishop celebrated Mass in Spanish to mark the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Concelebrating the Mass were Father Edgar Ruiz, pastor of St. Mary and St. Nicholas parishes in the city, and Father Rafael Ciro, parochial vicar. After the Mass, the bishop gave a special blessing to all the mothers in attendance.
The history of St. Mary’s began in 1892 as a parish for Slovak Catholics. The present church was built in 1902. Today, the parish serves the many Hispanic families who live in the city.
