Statement of the Bishop of Paterson, Kevin J. Sweeney, on the horrific events in Butler, Penn.
With all of the clergy, consecrated religious, and faithful of the Diocese of Paterson, I pray for those injured and for those who lost their lives yesterday in Butler, Penn. We pray for the recovery of former President Donald J. Trump following an assassination attempt and for all in law enforcement who put themselves so bravely in harm's way. We pray for our country which needs healing. Saint Paul reminds us to strengthen the bonds of faith, hope, and love in the human family, “encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you” (2 Corinthians 13:11). As we pray for healing in our national family, mourn the fallen, and implore heaven for the recovery of the wounded we pray also to be instruments of God's mercy as we remain ever mindful of the power of attitudes and words. As people of faith, we bind up wounds and strive to have the mind of Christ which opens us to the gracious power of God's wisdom. God bless our country and all of those who serve to keep us in safety.
