If you’re looking at this page, it means that the Holy Spirit is doing something in you and you are attending to it… tentatively or eagerly, it does not matter. What is good is that you are here, heeding that whisper in your heart. Thank you for your openness and courage, wherever you are in your journey exploring God’s call!
Once you begin to think and pray about your vocation, about who you are, your purpose in life, and how best to live it, you will eventually reach a point of feeling ‘at home’ with your decision. It’s a supernatural peace, both a gift and a promise from Jesus.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” -John 14:27
It’s key to understand that the journey is not the same for everyone.
As individual as each one of us is, that is how our discernment and decision-making will unfold: uniquely.
God and you will travel on a very personal path tailored to you as you lean into a decision about your future.
Having stated that, it may also be helpful to know that there are some common characteristics of a discernment journey.
Sometimes, it’s clear: you hear the call to religious life or priesthood or marriage, your heart and mind are in unison, and you follow through, without many obstacles, and arrive at the altar in short time. For many people, however, the vocation journey is more like the Labyrinth, a slow unfolding with twists and turns into the Center, as the head and heart work to align with God’s dream for you.
Okay, that’s rather dramatic. But, know that once you decide to really follow where God is leading you, the spiritual battle will begin more fiercely. Living your vocation fully – be it to the priesthood or consecrated religious life or dedicated single life (or marriage!) – is not for the faint-hearted.
As you travel along your way into your vocation, you will experience so much grace: obstacles (including family objection) removed, strength to move through the difficulties, unexpected support, peace, stillness of soul as you wait. God is ‘moved’ by every little ‘yes’ you give Him and God will never be outdone in generosity.
Discern means ‘to sift, to sort, to separate, to distinguish between’.
Decide means to ‘cut away’.
Pray about that as you ponder your vocational calling from God who desires your flourishing.
